Mount Shenku, located in Renai Township, Nantou County, was named after a captain who was sent by the Governor-General in Taiwan to investigate Nenggao terrain, forest, the distribution of indigenous tribes in the mountains and to look into the excavation of roads in 1897. Unfortunately, the captain and his entire crew have lost contact while encountering heavy snow on the main ridge of the Central Mountain Range. Search team was sent by the Puli Reclamation Department to search and rescue, but only to find relics of their belongings. This was the first incident in which all members of the expedition were annihilated during the Japanese occupation. Mount Shenku was named in memory of the death of the crew.
